Hello everyone,

Please refer to the picture below.

I am attempting to set up my 12 drives in mirrors. I was told the best set up for my NAS SAN for ESXi is 6 vDevs in sets of two(mirrored).

My question is if the set up I have below would accomplish this or do I need to set up 2 drives at a time?

My confusion is if setting up all the drives like below is ONE vDev or if its SIX. My instinct tells me that this is setting up one vDev, hence my apprehension.

Final question: I also read that Raid 10 would be an ideal set up for ESXi SAN storage, but how would I go about implementing that?

Thank you so much for all your help!

Current idea:
12, 2 TB drives set up as 6 vDev mirror sets.
1 Kingston 120GB ssdNOW 300 for SLOG.
All of this of ISCSI, with sync="always"

That is an incredibly crummy SSD. SLOG requires very fast SSDs to be of much use.

Yes.

Six. It's not immediately clear, unless you're familiar with ZFS.

Final question: I also read that Raid 10
Striped mirrors are sorta like RAID10.

Hello Eric,

Thank you for the response.

I have another SSD here, a crucial M500. Is that any better? If not, do you have any recommendations?

Thank you very much for your insight and wisdom good sir!

It's better, but that's not saying much. We're talking enterprise-grade SSDs, maybe very high-end consumer SSDs.
