So can I simply take the drives out of my ReadyNAS and stick them in my FreeNas box? I would assume no...

The ReadyNAS has 2x4TB drives in RAID1. Can I literally lift and shift these?

Do they use different file systems, etc? Require a reformat? Would I have to move one drive across, reformat, copy the data, then move the second and put them back in a RAID?

No, FreeNAS use ZFS and no HW RAID, you'll need to reformat the drives.

Yes. Though you might need to use the CLI to add the second drive, I don't know the new GUI really well.

I think you need to do a lot more reading before jumping in blind. Check out the links in my sig.
