Hi,

I just had a mail from my FreeNAS setup informing me of the following.

The following warning/error was logged by the smartd daemon:
Device: /dev/ada2, Self-Test Log error count increased from 0 to 1

I took a look at the SMART data using the 'smartctl' utility and I just need a little help interpreting the results. To me it looks like there has been one read error and there is no need to get worried just yet. Although there are a few sections that say 'pre-fail'. Again, looking this up seems to suggest this isn't anything to worry about (also ada1 has the same pre-fail message and that hasn't reported any errors).

But any advice as to if this all looks ok would be greatly appreciated. smartctrl text attached.

Cheers!

Basically you just had a read failure on a long test:

Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error
# 1 Extended offline Completed: read failure 20% 10161 2916665008
# 2 Extended offline Completed without error 00% 9923 -
# 3 Extended offline Completed without error 00% 9443 -
# 4 Extended offline Completed without error 00% 9180 -
# 5 Extended offline Completed without error 00% 8700 -

All of your SMART parameters are good since SMART tests don't actually impact those (for some reason that makes no sense to me).

Anyway, you should run a second long SMART test and see if it fails. If it does, then your drive has at least a single bad sector. :/

This is more than likely the beginning of a drive failing. :(

Do note that you can do a RMA on your disk right now since you've failed a SMART test, but I'd do a second one just to rule out random chance (like someone bumps the server at that exact moment or something).

Thank you for the helpful reply.

Just run a long smart test, had an email stating the following: "Device: /dev/ada2, 16 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors"

looking at smartctl now states:

Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error
# 1 Extended offline Completed: read failure 70% 10168 891806432
# 2 Extended offline Completed: read failure 20% 10161 2916665008

Time to RMA I think.

Thanks again!

Yep. You are definitely witnessing a drive failing. Time for an RMA if it is in warranty.
