I am running FreeNAS as a virtual box VM and I want to take advantage of the memory ballooning feature. How can I install the Guest Additions on the FreeNAS OS?

The answer is simple, you don't.

FreeNAS is an appliance and should be treated as such.
Better tell all the people on here running Crashplan in a Linux distro in Virtualbox that they shouldn't be doing that.

I think you've mixed things up. It's not possible to install the VBox guest additions on FreeNAS (as per the OPs original question), however FreeNAS does support guest VMs using VirtualBox, hence why people run Crashplan in the VirtualBox jail. Although, these days I recommend using iohyve (Bhyve) for running VMs on FreeNAS.
