Hi all,

I have a problem with a FreeNAS server that I built. The useable space is not anywhere near what it should be... I have same useable space as my other 6x 2TB disks RAIDz2 pool...

I have 8x 2TB drives in a vdev in RAIDz2. I lose 2 drives for the parity, so 6x2TB. That's 12TB. here's what my volume looks like...

I searched the forums to find ways to see what is in my pool. here 's output of zpool status:

NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
Backups_Primary ONLINE 0 0 0
raidz2-0 ONLINE 0 0 0
gptid/147f988d-ad8e-11e5-b02b-0013726680b4 ONLINE 0 0 0

However, zpool list gives me:
NAME SIZE ALLOC FREE CAP DEDUP HEALTH ALTROOT
Backups_Primary 14.5T 10.9T 3.65T 74% 1.00x ONLINE /mnt

I'm at lost here... I thought I would have something around 10TB to use.

My system is a Poweredge 2950 III with 2 Xeon and 32GB ECC Ram. I use a LSI 9207-8e in IT mode (firmware P16 to match the freebsd driver) connected to a MD1000 (JBOD) with 8 x 2TB SAS drives. Freenas v.9.2.1.8.

Also, is it normal I cannot connect to CIFS share on a volume being resilvered?

Thanks!

Mag

No... you have a pool consisting of two 4-drive RAIDZ2 vdevs. Right now, you have 4 drives for storage and 4 for parity, which makes your free space make sense.

If you want a single 8-disk RAIDZ2 vdev, you'll need to rebuild.

Also, note that one of your drives is resilvering - did you suffer a drive failure/is this expected?

You don't have a RAIDZ2 of 8x2TB drives in a RAIDZ2. You have 2 vdevs of 4 disks in RAIDZ2. So you've lost 4 disks to redundancy (2 disks in each vdev).

This is astonishing how great the failure is even after preparing this move for days....

We just replaced a drive, yes, hence the question about resilvering making CIFS unavailable.

The GUI did what you (or whoever is the sysadmin) told it to do. If you selected a 2x4 array, this is what would have been built.

I'd like to blame someone or something else... hehhe.

I have a question about the 80% recommended usage. Do you create the volume at 80% of the max space or you restrict usage with a quota?

Sorry, this one's a PEBKAC error :)

I'm fairly new to the fun of FreeNAS, but I don't think it matters one way or another. Just don't exceed 80% utilization on the pool (assuming an archival/file server use, not VMs).
