How to not build a server (probably)

Just came across some guys setup on hackaday, beautiful build regarding the design, but with all I read here on the forums in the back on my head the hardware setup made me cringe a bit.

38 used laptop drives, all connected through usb-sata bridges to onboard and conroller powered USB ports, no RAID, but Windows Storage Spaces using Win 8.1, fully open topside to dust, spilled drinks, etc.

Dunno, but just about every design decision this guy made with his build I'd never do in a server myself

The guy knows it is fooked build. He just wanted to do something different. But now I am thinking about a FreeNAS coffee table.
