I cannot seem to get smartd enabled. I get the error "Will not 'start' smartd because smartd_enable is NO'. When I 'service smartd start'. I try to edit /etc/rc.conf and the settings reset every time I reboot. I try to edit /tmp/rc.conf.freenas and the settings reset every time I reboot. I have even tried just creating a blank file and folder in etc, and it gets deleted upon reboot. I don't know why. I would like to enable smartd. I am running this on a hard drive. Installed from USB.

Please advise.

Use the GUI to enable the SMART service, do not use the CLI for that.

This may have nothing to do with your original question, but your drive with serial #5RF33NTY is dying and must be replaced ASAP.
Aside from lots of bad sectors and more than 30,000 reallocation events ...

Did you create a smart test task? You might need that before you can turn it on.

Wait, are you running FreeNAS on a laptop?

Well...crap..I didn't notice that. I just looked at the "Passed" part. I guess you could consider this to be a laptop drive. It is an 2.5" drive. I was gonna run it this way until I got a flash drive. Meanwhile, it still doesn't address my issue, but thanks for letting me know.
You think if I put this install on another drive that it might correct the smartd issue?

Sure do. Got it setup on the GUI to do a short-test once a month.
Well, your issues aside, that's a useless schedule. A monthly long test is the bare minimum you should do. Two long tests per month are better.

What is your hardware and FreeNAS version?

EDIT: *monthly* long test. Not daily. That would be excessive and detrimental to the drives.

I presume that was a typo and you either meant to say "daily short" or "monthly long".
Yup, already corrected.

Thanks for pointing it out, anyway. Don't want people getting the wrong idea. :p

That would be weird. The service periodically checks the SMART attributes, while the scheduled tasks run self-tests. These should be completely independent.
It is an 2.5" drive
So that's your boot drive? In that case, save your configuration and install FreeNAS on a different device, then throw this one away.

Seems unlikely, but you never know.

I've taken the advice and ordered an SATAIII SSD drive. Should be arriving in a few days. I'll try and see if these issues get cleared up with another new install; my problem was from a fresh install. I'll report back after the new install.

Fresh install. Brand new SSD drive. Same issue as before. Not related to issues with drive.
Updated to the latest stable version.
Tried to run smartd from the GUI.
This is the error that was shown in log/messages
Code:
Dec 21 11:14:04 freenas smartd[5835]: Configuration file /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf parsed but has no entries (like /dev/hda)
Dec 21 11:14:04 freenas root: /usr/local/etc/rc.d/smartd: WARNING: failed to start smartd
Dec 21 11:14:04 freenas notifier: /usr/local/etc/rc.d/smartd: WARNING: failed to start smartd

I tried to add the drive to the smart test on the GUI. It doesn't even appear. I dunno why I cannot test the main OS drive, but help would be appreciated.

I see "/dev/pass0" being listed, which implies you've got some manner of RAID in play. From your other thread I see you're using an ASRock Z77 board.

Have you absolutely confirmed that your SATA ports are set to AHCI, and there is no RAID setting enabled anywhere?

Also, this board does not support ECC memory.

ECC memory is not used. Running regular non-ECC DDR3-1600. Total of 8GiB.
Correct. I am running the Asrock Z77 Extreme 3 motherboard with an Intel Celeron CPU 1610 @ 2.60GHz.
Latest BIOS as well.

If you do smartctl -d auto -a /dev/ada0 do you get results back? That would mean that AHCI is fine.

Try manually adding the line in smartd.conf for

Code:
/dev/ada0 -a -n never -W 0,0,0

Not sure why the auto-script wouldn't have found them.

The motherboard choice and non-ECC RAM is another point entirely though.

Adding that code to smartd.conf and the smartd daemon started up just fine, but it still isn't listed in the GUI for SMART tests.

I admit the board, memory, or CPU isn't ideal, but I am working with what extra parts I have laying around. I'll be upgrading in the future.

Thanks for your help. Strange the script didn't find it.

Spoke too soon. Rebooted. Smartd.conf resetted back to blank.
This has been an issue. I can't get the manual settings to hold.
