Hi, I'm hosting some Virtual Box machines on FreeNAS - exactly 21 Windows and Linux Clients. In Virtual Box there is an option to tell the guest OS the VDI Image is a HDD or SDD. The Guest OS can then disable some HDD optimizations and stuff like that.

I was wondering what setting is more appropriate when the VDI file is hosted on a FreeNAS NFS or CIFS share? Since the pool is made of HDDs but ZFSs warmed up advanced changing mechanisms behave a lot more than a SSD.

Does this option have an effect when hosted on FreeNAS?

9.2.1.8 64bit with Xeon Quadcore, 64 GiB ECC Ram, 240 GB L2ARC, 60 GB ZIL, RaidZ2 6x WD Red 6TB.
