If you really want vm and not only jails on your Pool, depending of how many, you should consider mirrors instead of a z2.
It will be much faster!
Depending on wirkload 32gb could be fine.
Just try and use it as you want and have a look at the arc stats.
Theres a topic wehre you can see if its ok and probably you will decide if it is already fast enough.

So, I got it all built, but I'm getting this error when I boot up the server. At the Supermicro logo screen I get:

PEI--Intel Reference Code Execution...02

There is a series of 6 beeps that repeat after a second pause. Could this be a RAM issue or something else?

EDIT: Manual says memory error. There's really no way to test if the RAM it self is bad or if it's the incorrect RAM in the slots is there?

EDIT2: From the Supermicro site, https://www.supermicro.com/support/...1&prid=84940&type=DDR4 1.2V&ecc=1&reg=0&fbd=0

Newegg has 3 choices and I'm not sure which one I need as they all have the same model number.

If you give us the exact model number, we'll quickly tell you if it's the wrong type...

Oh yeah, that's registered. Get them out of there before you damage your CPU.

You need UDIMMs for every single LGA115x board in existence.

Well shit, I hope I didn't just damage my CPU. Anyway to tell I would of damaged the CPU or no? Basically turned it off after I heard the long beep.

It's unlikely. And if it works with UDIMMs, you'll know everything is in order.

Going to buy this set then. It's what is listed on Supermicro's site so hopefully it's fine. Going through Amazon though as it's ~$130 cheaper

I'm hoping that since I have to send the RAM back to Newegg and re-order it from them it would take almost as long or longer than just buying it now from Amazon. Though Amazon has no overnight shipping for it, so it'll be here Oct. 7th to 13th =/

Should be ok, but that one seems to be the low-profile version.

No real difference other than it being more difficult to grip.

Only the low profile version was listed on Supermicro's site. I didn't want to get this screwed up yet again.

And I couldn't find the non low-profile version anywhere.

Well, while that's shipping. Any other way I could test my hard drives while I wait for this shit to get here. Shouldn't hurt plugging them into my desktop to test that way should it?

No problem, assuming you're not using an El-Cheapo PSU on your desktop.

Of course not, May as well get something done while I wait then for another week...

I guess all good things require waiting and patience =/

Ok, so I go to boot the installer and it throws the following error at me:

mounting from msdosfs failed with error 19

Trying to mount root from msdosfs:/dev/msdosfs/FreeNAS []
mountroot: waiting for device /dev/msdosfs/FreeNAS ...
da1 at umass-sim1 bus 1 scbuss 11 target 0 lun 0
and so on.

Could it be the installer isn't formatted correctly? I used Rufus to format it on Windows 10.

Reformatted the installer and it booted just fine. Had to dig around for an old keyboard as it doesn't like my fancy mechanical ones :(

Do yourself a favor and use IPMI instead of messing with USB flash drives.

I've already got it installed on the flash drive. What's the benefits of using IPMI if my board even supports it?

  1. Open the IPMI web page
  2. Open the iKVM
  3. Load an ISO
  4. ISO is now available as a CD drive
  5. ???
  6. Profit!

I can't just swap to using IPMI once I got the install finished or it has to be from scratch?

The IPMI virtual cd functionality is an alternate way to do the install.

Ah ok. I'm just setting up the volumes/datasets/shares right now. Is there any reason not to create a new user/group and apply that as the default user/group for dataset permissions? I'm not really wanting to keep it as the root user.
