I am an IT enthusiast but hobbist. I pay my bills maintaining aircrafts.
I have some good skills on Arch Linux, pfSense and networking and pc assembling in general.
I am shifting from consumer appliances to self-assembled.
I just ended my pfSense firewall using a Supermicro ASRi-2558 MB, 8GB of ECC RAM and one intel S3500 SSD, working pretty fine.
I own a Synology 213+, satisfied for my home usage, basically media server (Plex), download center and storage....but I want more, I love the bleeding edge.
Basic future needs:
- 2 concurrent clients needing transcoding (1080p@24 DTS 5.1)
- 2/3 concurrent clients playing directly (1080p@24 DTS 5.1)
- File sever able to use high transfer speed within LAN (no need of remote transfer), for video editing, encoding.
My home LAN is GigE and AC1900 capable, clients, switch and and AP have those spec.
I have just started to read all guides in this forum, I am starting from zero with FreeNAS and I writing down the wishing list.
My rough idea is is a 6/8 bay, equipped with 6TB WD RED, 16GB and a SSD for OS / caching, with some Xeon CPU. I would like a nice looking case, with low noise levels. I am putting a budget of 1500-2000€.
I will let you know when ready to buy, meanwhile any advice is more than welcome.
