i would like to be able to setup freenas on a crappy laptop and mirror several HDD's to create secure storage.

after this i need to be able allow family to login and use it like a cloud service (upload and download files etc)

the thing is, i have freenas 9 on a vmware to play with first but i cant make shares only visible for the user they are meant for.
how would i go about setting this up?

my current setup:
virtualbox running my NAS
Works great on LAN but i need help with getting others to connect.
i have got users and groups sorted, super easy :)
i know how to allocate certain amount of storage at a time.

would really appreciate any help. my deadline is 2 weeks as thats when i get the hardware :)

VPN for access. DO NOT expose your windows shares over the internet. it is just plain stupid

you say its stupid but i know very little?

what other alternatives do you propose?
i will have multiple users accessing files, most probably up to 5 at a time?

Hosted owncloud will probably be better for his file integrity.

After all he wants to run FreeNAS on a crappy laptop with several connected drives. I cringe at the thought of how bad it will be.
