Hello -

Having used windows home server many years ago and most recently a QNAP device which has just about had it...I decided I want to jump on the FreeNAS bandwagon and build my own.

I've dabbled in FreeBSD back in the 90s so I wouldn't expect it to be too difficult to get going but I did notice some terms being used on the forums that I don't fully understand.

For example, on the QNAP, Synology etc - the storage is laid out in the following manner:

Physical Drives
RAID/SHR Configuration
volume1
folders
files

Is the equivalent in FreeNAS:

Physical Drives
zPool
dataset
folders
files

Or did I get that completely wrong?

Thanks for helping a newbie.

drives -> vdev(s) -> Pool
Pool -> datasets (volume) which are like folders with special capabilities
Datasets -> folders -> files

The newcomer guide provides a great overview of this.
