I am new here to FreeNAS, great idea, but I can't seem to get the shares working. I followed 2 different how to installs and both have the same problem. From win8.1 I can run the troubleshooter and it says that the host won't allow the connection, win7 says unable to find server, and LG blu-ray doesn't show the server at all for shared folders. All of these computers share between each other with no problems. Have set up groups, users, volumes, jails, can log into wim, can ping everything but see shares. Any ideas? this was on the 32 bit 9.2.1.5 today i'm trying the 64 bit

You were on the 32 bit version of FreeNAS which implies you have 4GB of RAM or less. I hope you are not using ZFS file system. Also, the users manual tells you how to create a windoze CIFS share properly, which is where I suspect your problem is, based on the limited info you posted. What jails did you set up? How are you trying to access the host?

With 1 GB of RAM you need to use different software. FreeNAS requires at least 2 GB of RAM to barely function with UFS, and 8 GB for ZFS. Plugins may require additional RAM--Plex in particular seems to be pretty RAM-hungry.

I guess I'll have to set this old dell up as a temp server while I load freenas on my server core 2, 4gig, 2 500gb hdd should be plenty to get started
thanks for the help. I can't seem to find the MANUAL though. I have looked around the forums and only found how to's. If anyone can please point me to this I will be greatful.

If you are going to use FreeNAS with 4GB RAM and you want to use ZFS, I recommend version 8.3.x, not version 9.x.

I did use ZFS file system and 1gb ram. This is an old dell sx280 I'm using as a trial before putting FreeNAS on my video server. I have double checked the CIFS directions several times. as for Jails I have been using this tutorial http://forums.freenas.org/index.php...couchpotato-sickbeard-and-transmission.19043/ and installed transmission torrent engine.

with 1gb ram do i need to use a different file system?

What on earth makes you think "I'll just use this software without checking its system requirements!"?
