Hail to all!
I'm an IT enthusiast with a limited budget, and I became interested in freeNAS after I wondered for a bit about what was so damn expensive about a commercial RAIDbox, and researched the alternatives.
After watching some extremely useful intro/tutorial videos (this guy comes to mind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgTBUQ6C2ZY), I decided to dedicate an old consumer PC to freeNAS with a new single HDD on stripe (and prayed that it would hold on till I get some more drives), and now I'm the king of my own home storage with 3x4TB discs on RAIDz.
During my many-many fails (happily, none involving data loss), I was amazed by the amount of community help on these forums, and I just had to register to say thanks to the guy paving the way before me regarding my latest problem.
