Hello community,
my name is Bernhard and I'm located in Germany. So far, I have no experience with FreeNAS and I'm looking forward to find information and support in this forum.
I will be using an HP microserver G7 for my FreeNAS installation.
Currently I'm completely lost and confused, with which version to start. On the FreeNAS homepage I'm directed to the download of 9.1, gathering information on google I find, that release 9.3 is available and stable. What about versions 10 & 11?
Any advice, where to start is highly appreciated.

Greetings from Germany

Bernhard

Greetings, Bernhard! Welcome to the forums.

FreeNAS version 9.10 is the current stable release. It's available at www.freenas.org/download-freenas-release/. This is the version you should use unless you're interested in testing pre-release software to help the developers find bugs. :)

The next version (FreeNAS 11) isn't due for a few more weeks.

There is quite a bit of reference material available here on the forum which you can study which ought to answer any questions you have and hopefully overcome any confusion.

Thanks a lot for that quick answer. I will first go ahead with 9.1 and probably try version 11 later in a vm ;)

Please don't. Version 9.10 is current. Version 9.1 is ancient.
Thanks and sorry, my fault. I meant 9.10. The version numbering is somewhat confusing to me. Usually I would expext that 9.1 is named 9.01 and that 9.10 is far higher. New world, new rules, no problem at all :)

Unfortunately, version numbering in FreeNAS has been kind of a mess for a while now. Hopefully it will get back on track with the release of 11.

Just trying 9.10 with a raidz1 with smb-share. The server has 4GB RAM only and it seems, that the data transmission speed is not slower than with a standard Ubuntu server, probably a bit faster. On average I get 58 MiB/s, I was expecting far less according the the hardware recommendations :). Probably this goes down with larger disks?
Currently I have 3 x 500 GB for testing in that machine. At the end I would like to use 4 x 4 TB WD Red

Note: FreeNAS needs a minimum of 8GB of RAM.

Though HP says 8GB is the maximum you can put in your Gen 7 Microserver, you can put 16GB ECC RAM in them. I have two of them.

That's right. I'm currently looking at ebay for 2x8 GB ECC RAM. I'm not a specialist in that field and a bit lost with all the additional information in the offers an the coding, going along with the RAMs. The easy way is to perselect "HP Microserver", however then I only find high-price offers.
I have to dig a bit more into all details...
