FreeNAS SMART versus Vendor SMART

I posted a message on Sunday to which I received no responses so I'll repost with different parameters.

I received what appeared to be an SMART error message on one of my 4TB IronWolf drives which is in a RAID-Z2 pool. I read the "Hard Drive Troubleshooting Guide" here on the forum. I then ran the a smartctl short test on the drive and IDs 197 and 198 showed errors. I shut down the system and checked all the cables and their connections and then boot the system with the Seagate SeaTools diagnostic disk. I ran Seagate's Short test and long test and both passed.

Next I rebooted FreeNAS and did another smartctl short test which showed none of the ID 197 and 198 errors but did show and "ATA Error Count: 5" message followed by what appeared to be descriptions of the errors.

So I'm getting conflicting results from the smartctl command used in FreeNAS vs the SMART test used by Seagate. Without a failure in the Seagate SMART test which produces an RMA number, I cannot RMA the drive. But is the drive really going bad or is this some quirk in the FreeNAS smartctl program. I've include output from the smartctl programs in my original message which show the errors I'm seeing.

The drive appears to be working fine and the server is running as it should. What should I do???

Thank you

Greg ...

Post a screen capture of the Seagate Test and the Results.

Passing Short and Long tests is good and I suspect SMART shows that as well. My concern is Seagatye tools are looking at the summary value of the drive being okay. Yes the drive is okay, for now, but it is failing.

So post the screen captures or outputs and the output of the smartctl -a parameter.

Joeschmuck, thank you for replying.

The output of the smartctl -a /dev/ada2 is displayed below. This smartctl output was run after I got the 197, 198 errors and had run both the SMART long and short tests. The SMART tests were run on both my FreeNAS system via the smartctl command and via the bootable SeaTools SMART tests. The output of the SeaTools SMART tests (both long and short) just said "PASSED". No other information was given.

If you need it, I also have the output of the smartctl tests which include the original SMART errors (197,198 etc).

I think what the smartctl output is telling me is that errors were found, but have been corrected. Not sure if this means the drive is failing or not. I have contacted Seagate but they appear reluctant to RMA the drive. The drive is only a little under 3 months in use.

I know the FreeNAS community appear to recommend the WD Red drives, but after WD sneaking SMR drives out to the unsuspecting public, I decided to go with the SeaGate IronWolf drives which I knew were CMR.

So please let me know if I should be worried about this drive. In the meantime, I think I'll do some more reading on what SMART really does and how it works.

Thanks for you help.
