I'm affraid the HDD I have freenas installed to is going to go out soon ( its an old 10 gig hdd ). If it were to go out would I lose all my documents I have stored on the nas server if I install a new hdd or would it save them and restore them after a new hdd and freenas installation?

  1. Buy a second USB stick
  2. Backup your configuration using System -> Settings -> General -> Save Config
  3. Install lastest and greatest to 2nd stick
  4. Restore your configuration using System -> Settings -> General -> Upload Config

If it doesn't work you simply swap back to your original stick and reboot.
What you install to isn't relevant to the procedure, but I would use a USB stick unless you have a special reason otherwise.

OKI thanks. Another question once I get the flash drive do I just unplug the freenas hdd I had before and change boot priority?

Yep - assuming your machine can boot from USB, that's all you need to do.
