If I installed FreeNAS as a VM in VirtualBox (a well documented process) with Debian 6 as my host OS, could I also run Apache within Debian and serve out a website without there being any conflicts between FreeNAS and the web service? I don't know what the conflicts would be as I'm a beginner with FreeNAS and Debian, I'm just wondering if this is possible?

To clarify, I'm talking about using Debian/Apache as a web server instead of the FreeNAS web server feature. Thanks.

We may be better off exploring elsewhere. Gotta say this forum doesn't seem very active. I've had better luck on the topic of FreeNAS at Tom's Hardware and the Virtual Box forums.

Also it seems that FreeNAS is unnecessary if you are going to run a Linux distro as you can use SMB to accomplish basically the same goal. It seems that FreeNAS is a one-stop shop of sorts, providing a stand alone kind of OS along with all the other bells and whistles....but if you are going to run another OS like a Linux distro it's easy to get a NAS out of it.

FreeNAS uses lighttp as it's webserver. lighthttp supports virtual hosting so you should be able to host more than one website on it.

Google for 'lighttpd virtual host' and it should get you on the right path. I've never done it and would recommend against it but if you want to explore it in a safe way please tell us your findings.
