I would like to setup a NAS that all my devices can access.

I would like to do the following activities:

1) Access my mp3/mp4 collection from preferably my apple TV or xbox or samsung bd player. Stream music/videos living on the NAS.

(Do I need a media server to do this or can the apple TV, xbox, or bd player do the decoding/playing?)

2) Access files from a Mac - Mavericks. (pictures, documents)
3) Access files from a PC - Win7 (pictures, documents)

Is this possible with FreeNAS?

That's practically the exact use case for a NAS in the home....

I recommend looking at Plex though for the streaming

use CIFS for mac/windows access and plex for media access.

The AppleTV does not have the ability to play media from a network share, nor (by default) to act as a Plex client. You can hack on it a bit to install PlexConnect, though, which will let you use it as a Plex client.

Can't speak to your XBox or BD player. If either of them has a Plex client available, that'd be the way to go.
