I couldn't track it down, but as someone may have the same problem, I just report it here.

I was running 11.1-U5 and started the update to 11.1-U6, but it didn't boot up (2 tries).
I reverted back to 11.1-U5 and removed U6 from the boot device. A few weeks later (i.e. yesterday) I changed trains to 11.2, but 11.2-RC2 did not finish booting either. Instead it seemed to shut down automatically at some point during the boot process, ending with
Waiting (max 60 seconds) for system process `syncer' to stop...
Syncing disks, vnodes remaining... 0 0 done
All buffers synced.

I reverted back to 11.1-U5 but left 11.2-RC2 active.
Today I checked for a bios update for my ASUS P9D-X and found version 2101 (to replace 1201). When I plugged in the USB stick with the bios file to the MB, I noticed I had left a memtest86+ USB stick attached to the board before.
After the bios update Freenas flawlessly booted into 11.2-RC2.
I reattached the memtest stick to see if that was the cause, but again 11.2-RC2 booted smoothly.

So it seems as if the P9D-X bios update was mandatory.

My system:
1x ASUS P9D-X iC222, BIOS ver 2101
1x Intel Core i3-4130T
4x Kingston ValueRAM DIMM 8 GB ECC DDR3-1600
Kingston A400 120GB SA400S37 (Boot Device)
4x Western Digital 3TB WD30EFRX Red
1x Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 ATX
1x be quiet! System Power 7 300W ATX

Btw, this is an occasion to say thank you again to the freenas devs. I can rely on my FreeNAS server since the beginning of 2014. Still deeply impressed!
