Hi all - I am looking at purchasing a flashed HP H220 to put in a HP DL380 G5 but have been reading about the fan issues.

Does anyone know if a flashed H220 will cause the fans to run flat out or given it is a HP card will it be OK ? My concern is that it will have non-HP firmware.

Replacing the hardware is not an option (I would have found Dell gear) as work refuses to spend any money. I need to make this hardware work.

This is the card:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-H220...IT-mode-ZFS-FreeNAS-unRAID-Low-P/163054322722

Item description:

Listed for sale are what were originally HP H220 HBA SAS controller cards that I modified for use with ZFS. They have been cross-flashed to Avago / LSI 9207-8i IT (Initiator Target) firmware version P20 (specifically 20.00.07.00). I also flashed the LSI/Avago MPTSAS2 BIOS ROM version 07.39.02.00 and UEFI 07.27.01.01 so that it is easier to access the controller's ROM without booting an OS.
This is a half / low profile card meant for server chassis.

  1. LSI Avago IT mode firmware version P20 (20.00.07.00)
  2. MPTSAS2 BIOS ROM flashed version 07.39.02.00
  3. MPTSAS2 UEFI ROM flashed version 07.27.01.01
  4. Original SAS address preserved

These HBA controllers are based on the LSI SAS2308 SAS controller chipset and support PCI-E 3.0 specifications with x8 lanes, providing up to 7880MB/sec bandwidth between this card and your system! The controller has 2 SFF-8087 connectors, each carrying 4 SAS lanes.

I have purchased a HP H220 pre-flashed to IT mode from "theartofserver" on eBay (I believe he sells a lot of HBA's to FreeNAS guys).

I'll report back with the outcome.

@dlavigne - I purchased the HP H220 already flashed to IT mode and installed this morning. Server POSTs fine and no excess fan speed. I will buy the SAS cables next and make sure its all good with drives hanging off it.
