If been trying to come up with a build thats cheaper then a Synology DiskStation DS415+

If i can't find a Freenas build cheaper, then i'm thinking about getting that one.

The hardware i came up with after looking around in lots of posts:

- Bitfeni Prodigy M (micro ATX)
- ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3 (micro ATX - Socket AM3+ - AMD 760G - USB 3.0 - Gigabit Ethernet)
- AMD FX 4300 (3.8 GHz - 4 cores - 6 MB cache - Socket AM3+)
- Seasonic S12G-450 (ATX12V/EPS12V - 100-240 Volt - 450 Watt - 80 PLUS Gold)
*edit* - Crucial - 16 GB : 2 x 8 GB - DIMM 240-pins - 1866 MHz / PC3-14900 - CL13 - 1.5 V - ECC non-buffered

*edit* New total cost: 485,81 from Azerty (Dutch webshop)

What do you think about this build?
Or anyone with any advice for a different build. Without harddisk max. 500 euro.

Mostly for storage + sickbeard/couchpotato download.

Up to 4 HDDs? Dell Poweredge T20 or Lenovo TS140 for up to 5 HDDs. The Xeon E3 version of the T20 is <400EUr shipped to NL with 4GB RAM, just add another 8GB ECC DIMM and you're good.

I have been looking at the Poweredge T20. How does that measure up against the hardware i picked?

Clearly 4 harddisk instead of the 6 that i could use in the custom build.
Processor's seem about the same.
Can i just add 8GB for 12GB memory? Or do need to replace the 4GB for 8Gb? (Need identical memory in dual banks?)
If i have to buy 2x8GB to replace the 4GB, then it becomes too expensive.
Or i could get 3x4GB kingston, if i can combine it with the included memory.

You can just add another 8GB DIMM to the 4GB DIMM. Unless you run some 10Gbe interfaces dualchannel etc. wouldn't matter that much.

the T20's are nice boxes, I have two of the Xeon models here. temps are fine, fans don't spin up even after weeks of full load from boinc.
