When I lived in an apartment where running wires was difficult I ran it along the wall and if I had to run the wire through a doorway, I threw a small rug over the wire. Now it's not a trip hazard. ;) Ran that way in the last apartment I lived in for 2 years without a problem.
Another option(that is a bit more tacky) is to run it along the corner of the ceiling. If you use a staple gun and are careful, you can staple the wire to the corner without stapling *through* the wire. If your wire color matches the wall this is almost unnoticeable.
