New to the site and excited to get started on my FreeNAS computer build.

I purchased a Supermicro X11SSM-F online and am awaiting delivery. I consulted the supermicro web site and found a very short list of tested RAM. The price of the tested RAM is shocking and I am looking for alternatives.

I saw mention of Crucial RAM on other posts. I like to stick to manufacturer recommendations if possible, but am having sticker shock at the price of the recommended RAM. Can anyone suggest RAM that will work for my motherboard or is there a list of tested MoBo that is provided by other ram manufacturers? I am looking for 16 Gb sticks of ECC RAM.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the FreeNAS world :)

Not sure you already looked at this https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?resources/supermicro-x10-and-x11-motherboard-faq.5/

Cost of ECC has always be the problem I face to pull the trigger to upgrade my server from the desktop hardware I've started two years ago, so I'm saving for a X9 used supermicro that uses DDR3 RAM.

Stick to the plan to build with server grade hardware as it is recommended for a good reason. X11 users will jump in to provide their experience for sure.

Thanks for the information. I am looking at building mine over a time period as well. I did not realize that the cost of the ram would be close to the cost of the processor for the 16G sticks.

I don't think they currently have these in stock today, but if I were you I would
get an order in at that price now. The price is lower than I've seen in a while
for that RAM, it's what several members with the X11SSM-F board run in theirs
(me included)

This is the RAM I purchased for my X11SSM-F motherboard. The cost was $114.99 so you can see that prices do change. I did a quick internet search and didn't see a cheaper one. You will need to request a quote and maybe it will be lower, fingers crossed.
