My freenas box running 11.3 u1 got update notification with next version showing as 11.2 u8.
Release notes were for 11.3 u3??(can't remember exactly)
Stupidly proceeded:
booted once to 11.2 without GUI
SSH'd to it(hence i know it downgraded to 11.2)
freenas-update check failed with "Received exception during download phase, cannot update"

quick check of /var/log/messages
no internet connection causes freeenas-update exception
nonexistent reference to old UI in database causes no GUI

No, you can reboot to your boot environment before the "upgrade". Hit the space bar when the FreeNAS boot menu comes up, and select your previous boot environment. Then, once you're back in 11.3, run midclt call update.set_train FreeNAS-11.3-STABLE to correct the incorrectly offered upgrade train. (This is courtesy of @Patrick M. Hausen.)
