Hello,

I have already a N40L and been thinking about RAID5 or ZFS (raid config) isn't really a backup solution.

Is a stupid thing to use 4x 3TB red WD disk in a JBOD config with a smart monitoring with mail alert configured so when a disk is detecting a possible failure i just shutdown, clone disk to new one and boot freenas again?

I'm thinking about use 3tb green WD disk to store externally important data as backup. I mean... copy information and shutdown it until next sync. I don0t think a 1:1 is needed.

Is a dumb solution?? I just need enough performance to stream 1 1080p film on my N40L

P.D:Sorry about my bad english

Your English is fine.

What happens if the disk with the warning dies while cloning? What if a disk dies without warning?

There isn't one solution for everyone. It depends on what your needs are and how important is the data. If you have everything that's important backed up elsewhere, JBOD for unimportant data may be fine. How important is the data and how quickly do you need to get it back online if your primary copy dies?

You are right...

Storage will be used for my Blueray ISO streamed to HTPC.

Even I can get my data back... the price of a disk might be worth the headache.

I can try the bios mod to use DVD-ROM sata connector for parity disk.
