Hello,

I recently built a 6x3TB FreeNAS 9.3.1 system and have been playing around with various options and learning the system before settling transferring over my data. With my first FreeNAS install, I opted for RAID-Z2 and left the drives unencrypted and ended up with a 10.9TiB available pool. I wanted to see what the processor overhead was like for an encrypted setup so I wiped that original pool and created a new encrypted pool. The FreeNAS menu estimates that I would have the same 10.9TiB available but, after creation, I now only have 10.4TiB available. I wiped this encrypted pool and now newly created unencrypted pools only offer 10.4TiB available space. I have tried rebooting between wipes and creation, reinstalling FreeNAS on the USB stick, wiping the platters via FreeNAS GUI, and nothing seems to solve the disappearing space. I won't feel comfortable transferring my data over until I at least understand why this is happening.

what is the output of zfs list? I have the same pool and your number should be ~10.66TiB or 10.7TiB if you add up the output of zfs list.

It isn't too far off, but I know for a fact that it used to be more and that is driving me mad trying to figure out why.

Looks pretty close to me. This is something people get all worked up over but really it doesn't matter. The way it's calculated is a guess anyways.

It only matters to me since the volume creation still estimates 10.9TiB available and the first couple of pools I created reported 10.9TiB available. I think the number given for the total space has gone down as well but I can't remember what it originally was.

Well you can wipe the drives using dd. Then they will be like the day you bought them. I doubt this will change anything though. Computers are machines they do the same thing exactly the same over and over again. This is what they are designed to do.

Was it all done with the same FreeNAS version? I think the way space is reported may have changed slightly, at least since 9.2.1

There have been at least two small updates since my first install, but no major version changes.

Maybe that's irrelevant then!
