First thread here, though I've been reading for quite some time now. I recently configured my FreeNAS box and all the plugins etc, but since I didn't know what I was really getting into, I started with some hard drives I had lying around (don't worry, all other hardware parts are FreeNAS "friendly", I do have ECC RAM and all that stuff). I am now aiming for redundancy, but money is hard to get, and for now I bought a single 4TB WD Red for storage. I will be buying another one of these in a month or so, but I need to store my data in the box as soon as possible. The question is, when I buy the next drive, will I be able to create a mirror with it of the one I already have installed without loosing any data?

Yes, but it's tricky, as you can't do it through the GUI. The appropriate CLI steps appear to be documented in this thread, though I can't vouch for them personally.
