Nickt - I had a similar experience, except that eventually my 3.6.3 stopped working, at which point I ripped it out and started over (and documented it here), and then it worked. My upgrade sequence included 3.7.0 in addition to the ones you've listed.
Your suspicion may be correct, except that I'm not sure what "pushing out" a new version really means (other than simply making it available on the crashplan site). When I first installed FreeNAS, it was clear that 3.6.4 and 3.7.0 were already available (sounds like your timing too), but they were never going to install.
