Hi all,

I recently started getting this error and I'm really stuck on what to do to fix it.

Error: Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error.

OS Version: TrueNAS-12.0-RELEASE
Jail Version: 12.2-RELEASE-p1
Plex Media Server Plexpass Version: 1.20.3.3483

Attached are the logs from Plex.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I skimmed thru this and it looks as if the audio is causing failure. It looks as if you are dvr and encoding your own stuff i see lots of .ts files. You might try a handbrake or ffmpeg to convert these files to files that can direct play mp4/aac seems to be the best combo. mkv is becoming more and more supported though.

Thanks for taking a look at this, appreciate it. That's interesting as it was working on an MKV file earlier today however, the file type that threw the error was MP4. Also, there are a few different TV shows I stream via my Plex Media Server and they are all MKV and work without any issues.

This might be a silly question however, do you know if it's possible to change/replace the Transcoder? I'm assuming the answer might be no to this as the Plex Media Server web app seems hardcoded to whatever Plex wants to use.

I just ran ls -l for the following path and the owner is root with the group wheel.

\iocage\jails\plex\root

In answer to your other question, the folder path below you referenced from the logs is empty.

From inside the plex jail who owns /tmp? I think by default it will be owned by root. I think youll want this directory and anything in it owned by the plex user. From freenas cli this is the path /mnt/tank/iocage/jails/plex/root/tmp

Are you on the latest stable build of Truenas and Plex? This issue just stopped for me at some point and never resurfaced. No idea what caused it but it was very annoying.

Plex 1.21.3.4014 but updating now,

Recently I had flawless remote streaming no problems on FreeNAS but updated when I upgraded to USB 3.1 new ProBox and larger HDD's I did a TrueNAS fresh install.

I'm not sure you can just roll back without issues - haven't seen much on this topic recently actually.

Best might be for you to export your pool, make a new install of the release version and then import your pool.

Or wait till someone that knows what they're talking about on this topic comes by to give you an authoritative response.

What I am sure of is that you need to be on the stable train if you want a smooth ride.
