My goal is to quickly backup large amount of data from my laptop to my FreeNAS server.

Since, I don't have a faster router with large transfer rates (Wireless N), I was wondering is there any other way to connect to my FreeNAS server?

Is it possible to directly connect my laptop to my FreeNAS server using a Ethernet cable? If so, how do I configure my FreeNAS server's networking interface for my laptop to detect the FreeNAS server that is connect directly with Ethernet cable?

Just connect your laptop to the network by ethernet cable, disable its wifi, and use the FreeNAS server exactly as you have been.

If you aren't using Gigabit ethernet already, you could add a GigE switch and ensure that the NAS and the laptop are both connected to it.
