Okay so please help me out I have 3 questions.

1. Can you use a 8 port SATA PCI card that works with freenas?

2. Can you use free Nas with an a virtual machine?

3. I have an existing freenas computer setup I have four 2TB drives and it doesn't seem to compress any of the data on the drives. My compression ratio is x1.01

The LSI 9211-8i and its variants are very popular and well supported.

Need clarification. Are you wanting to run FreeNAS as a guest under a virtualization? It can be done safely under ESXi if you do everything right. Are you wanting to use FreeNAS as a VM host? You can do that using a VirtualBox jail.

If your compression ratio is 1.01, it is compressing the data, it just isn't compressing it very much. What kind of data is it? Most media is already compressed, and won't compress further.
