I was using 9.2.1.5 and life was good, then samba stopped working. No access to shares. I played with the workarounds, no luck. Figured I'd see if 9.2.1.6 beta fixed it, no dice. So here is where I sit:

Hostname freenas.local
Edit
Build FreeNAS-9.2.1.6-BETA-88abc2b-x64
Platform Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU G550 @ 2.60GHz
Memory 20333MB
System Time Mon May 19 08:34:59 EDT 2014
Uptime 8:34AM up 9 mins, 1 user

I boot, logon to GUI. Click servives and CIFS is off. Try to start it, and get "The service could not be started."

I delete smb4.conf (rm /usr/local/etc/smb4.conf) and attempt to turn on CIFS, and still won't start.

Looking for next steps.

Found this thread https://bugs.freenas.org/issues/4194

Seems to apply as one of my volumes with a CIFS share is names NetShares. However I haven't found the suggested error message about unable to open log file that capitalization of the volume is supposed to cause.

I found another thread that discusses renaming the volume but I'm not having success as all attempts to detach (or mount) the NetShares gets a return of device busy.

So this is getting annoying. I can't figure out how to detach the volume to rename it to all lower case...IF that is even the problem. I down graded to 9.2.1.2 and even went back up to 9.2.13 and the problems remains. I can't get CIFS working. All other services seem to be fine.

I ran into similar issues, rebuilt the box from scratch several times.
In my case the culprit was failing to specify a system dataset pool in Settings | Advanced with the default checked [use system dataset for syslog].
So that allowed me to get CIFS fired up, but now I have issues trying to authenticate. The samba4 implementation seems problematic - I did not run into similar issues with FreeNAS 8.x.

jackstraw: I have a system dataset assigned, the box is checked and I'm getting files.

I am also facing the exact problem. I m on 9.2.1.2. Few days ago, I was able to copy and write data into my system and suddenly the next morning when I booted my system and everythings works fine but I am not able to connect to my share through map network drive. I am also not able to see FREENAS in My network places. When I login to the admin, and in services I found CIFS off..I tried to start, but got the message " Service could not be started". Reinstalled the pendrive, autoimported the volume, created users and groups again as before, but no success, CIFS not working.

I have not done any changes, and how suddenly that has happened I am not able to figure it out. Please guide what to do..as i have valuable data on my system.

Per the bug report - the issue in #4194 was fixed in 9.2.1.1. Honestly, you can't begin fixing a problem till successfully diagnosing it. A part of this involves reviewing log files. If you skip this process then you are likely to create new problems and make it that much harder to diagnose an fix the original issue.

Rahul, you should start a new thread since your problem may not be related to the problem reported here.

Rahul,
Please start a new thread in the forums for this problem.

In it post the following:

- a detailed summary of hardware in your computer.
- output of 'testparm'
- information from log files (/var/log/messages /var/log/samba4/log.smbd /var/log/samba4/log.nmbd. In your case, try to start CIFS then immediately view the logs.
- detailed description on your problem including windows version and freenas version
- list all troubleshooting tasks and changes you've made since the problem appeared.

One method of accessing log files is to SSH into your server and type ‘cat /var/log/messages'. Repeat for other logs. Copy and paste info out of it.
