Hi, having speed issues on my pool.

I did a scrub, and still have CKSUM errors :

Code:
[root@freenas] ~# zpool status -v
  pool: gra1
 state: ONLINE
status: One or more devices has experienced an unrecoverable error. An
attempt was made to correct the error. Applications are unaffected.
action: Determine if the device needs to be replaced, and clear the errors
using 'zpool clear' or replace the device with 'zpool replace'.

I did change my sata cable en still having this CKSUM increasing.

I did run a long memtest without error

199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count seems to be hihg, nope ?

thanks !

PS : I d'ont know if it could be related, but I can't proper restar my freenas or shutdown, freeze on :

Code:
ugen4.3: <JetFlash> at usbus4 (disconnected)
umass1 : at uhub4, port4, addr3 (disconnected)
(da1:umass-sim1:1:0:0): lost device - 0 outstanding, 1 refs

I did a scrub, and still have CKSUM errors

The CKSUM errors won't go away, until you either clear the errors with the 'zpool clear' or replace the drive. If you do the "zpool clear", you need to monitor the status, in case there is really is a problem.

I did a long test on my ada3

Code:
[root@freenas] ~# smarctl -a /dev/ada3

That's not a test - you just displayed the results.

It appears that the long test never completed. Did you interrupt it?

Code:
Offline data collection status: (0x84) Offline data collection activity
was suspended by an interrupting command from host.
...
# 1 Extended offline Interrupted (host reset) 80% 11560

Here's the code for a long test: smartctl -t long /dev/ada3

Yes, the UDMA_CRC_Error_Count seems to be high - I'd replace the drive.

I d'ont know if it could be related, but I can't proper restart my freenas or shutdown

If these operations don't work properly, then yes, it could create these issues and potentially corrupt your pool.

You need to solve this problem right away.

I had to laugh at the UDMA_CRC_Error_Count = 915472. In Windows 2000 and newer, if Windows records 5(yes, five) errors of UDMA CRC errors over the OS' life it disables UDMA for that SATA controller channel. Yes, this value survives reboots. Then hilarity(and major performance penalties) ensue because those super fast SSDs and high performance drives that we all own suddenly won't go above 25MB/sec. Additionally, since UDMA is disabled all hard drive access require your CPU to wait for the drive to reply which tanks performance in ways you'd never imagine. Woohoo! There is a registry change you have to do to reset the value to zero and get back UDMA. Not much fun in the Windows world.

Anyway, the CRC errors are most commonly caused by either the SATA/IDE controller or SATA/IDE cable itself. I'd try replacing the cable first to see if that stops the errors from continuing to increase.

Thanks both of you for your answers :)

I did previously a zpool clean then a zpool scrub. What do you mean by monitoring the status ?

...
# 1 Extended offline Interrupted (host reset) 80% 11560

Here's the code for a long test: smartctl -t long /dev/ada3

I did the long test command line. Don't know why it will be interrupted ?

Code:
=== START OF OFFLINE IMMEDIATE AND SELF-TEST SECTION ===
Sending command: "Execute SMART Extended self-test routine immediately in off-line mode".
Drive command "Execute SMART Extended self-test routine immediately in off-line mode" successful.
Testing has begun.

I think it's my thumb drive where my plugins are stored, with my jail. How do I check that ?

Yeah still remember on w2000, rebooting and checking udma again and again :)

You mean Freenas won't update this number ? Read my post, I did already change my cable, nothing change, still this cksum increasing.....

Please let it run for 383 minutes, run: smarctl -a /dev/ada3

and report back with the results.

Please wait 383 minutes for test to complete.

I did have a more detailed response, but accidentally closed my browser.

i did a second long test and it ran fine. i think I have an issue with my GUI and SMART planning. I never had result. Somehow a process ends the smart test (one short per day, one long per month)

i did a second long test and it ran fine. i think I have an issue with my GUI and SMART planning. I never had result. Somehow a process ends the smart test (one short per day, one long per month)

You don't get results provided, you query the hard drive SMART info and look at it. Also, the hard drive has no concept of what day it is. It only knows how many hours its been powered on.

Look at the bold below....

Code:
[root@freenas] ~# smartctl -a /dev/ada3

At the time of your post your hard drive was on hour 11699. Notice that the latest short test happened in the same power-on hour as the SMART data you posted. The Long test(line #2) completed 18 hours prior(at power-on hour 11681). The long test completed without errors. The fact that it completed without errors and SMART info looks good otherwise tends to confirm that the hard drive is fine.

Yeah, the fact that the CKSUM is increasing is definitely a bad sign. I'd try hooking up the hard drive to a different SATA port. If that doesn't work I'd try a different SATA controller(assuming your motherboard has more than 1 or you have a spare one lying around). You could perhaps try lowering the SATA speed from 3.0Gbps to 1.5Gbps too and see if that helps. Was the SATA cable you put in the computer new? Any chance it is broken too? I know its rare to have 2 of the same thing bad, but the CRC error is almost always not the hard drive. Granted, the hard drive can be the problem if the hard drive is somehow having problems with data corruption due to firmware bugs or something, but that's extremely rare.

Also, I just noticed you have a boo-boo in your configuration. Your hard drive is green powered and shouldn't be used in any non-desktop or RAID environment without using the wdidle tool to change the time to park the heads. WD considers the drive to be rated for 300k-500k cycles, and according to SMART parameter #193 you are already at about 185k. Just as a comparison, my drive have been powered on non-stop for almost 3 years and none have over 25k because I changed my setting(I have 24 Green drives in my server). This is something that should be fixed sooner than later, but is not something you shouldn't worry about right now(the CRCs should be your bigger concern). It's super easy to do and takes just a few seconds with a DOS boot disk. If you search the forum for wdidle I'm sure you'll find a thread where I discussed this in great length. My drives are set to 300 seconds. The latest version is 1.05 if you want to search for a download link in Google. The fact that you haven't used the wdidle tool is not the cause for your CRC errors.

Just to recap so its clear, the issue is not likely the hard drive. So your SATA cable(s) suck(crappy brand?) or the particular SATA port your hard drive is connected to sucks, or your SATA controller sucks. Now you just need to figure out which one it is. ;)
