So i have the three pre-packaged plugins installed..

plugin - hostname
mt-daapd - mt-daapd_1
transmission - bit_2
miniDLNA - dlna_1

How can i achieve these two things?
  1. change the hostname of each of the machines
    1. something like... http://transmission:9091
    2. or... http://mediaserver
    3. or ... http://firefly
  2. how can i make that hostname reachable via my lan?
    1. I have made static dhcp leases for each of these jails to make sure they always get the same IP and hostname given via my router.. which handles DNS.

Within each jail, you should be able to run the hostname command. e.g. in the first jail, type "hostname transmission". Make sure that the changed hostname matches the value on the router's DNS.

I did this yet, on my lan its not accessible via the hostname. is there some issue with how freenas has the jail configured?

in my transmission jail i ran:
$ hostname transmission

On my DD-WRT under services, i added dhcp reserved IPs by mac for
transmission -> 192.168.1.133

EDIT:
Got it working, had to append my domain name to the end of the hostname.. derp.
