Hello,

after weeks of no problems I tried today to connect our FreeNAS box without success.
No GUI, no ssh, no console (by IPMI redirect console)
In console I pressed 9 to get into shell - nothing happens but line feeds.
System is actual Supermicro HW (X9/X10 ?) with 32GB RAM. Last Update was made 10-12 weeks ago.
Shares and iSCSI devices are accessible.
It's mainly used for Backup Hyper-V boxes and one CIFS share.
Should I concern in loosing data when powerdown/-up the box?
Something else I could try?

Regards
Gerd

Hard to tell... Did you try rebooting to see what happens?

You didn't provide any information regarding your pool layout, size and number of drives, etc.

You might not have enough RAM for iSCSI.

And, you might have a damaged boot device. Hopefully you have a backup of your configuration file, should you need to reinstall FreeNAS.

Supermicro 825TQ-R740LPB
SM X10SRL-F, E5-1620V3 QC 3.5Ghz, 32GB ECC-RAM,
6x4TB WD RED
RAID-Z1
Maybe this is not enough memory for 1 iSCSI drive used for backup and 1 CIFS share which is almost unsed and not frequently accessed.
Around 50% disk space is unsed by now.

Should the OS itself not always be accessible?
Our goal was to replace two QNAP devices. Should I cancel this project?
My concern/thoughts: how reliable is FreeNAS?

Regards and thx for spending some time for my problems.

Perhaps we can get @jgreco to add his 2 cents. He is using iSCSI on a FreeNAS server. I don't have the particulars readily available, but I think he has about 4TB of storage and might have 128GB of RAM in the box.

I just rebooted the box after I made my backups to an QNAP TS459U
FreeNAS doesn't boot checksum error. Great!

Initial install was made with 9.3-STABLE-201506292332, then one update to 9.3-STABLE-201509022158.
Any chance to repair without fresh install?

I did say "And, you might have a damaged boot device. Hopefully you have a backup of your configuration file, should you need to reinstall FreeNAS."

Do you have a backup of your configuration file? If so, just reinstall FreeNAS on a new boot device and restore the configuration. If using a flash drive, install to a mirrored set.

Probably not. If you have a backup copy of your configuration file, you can restore it, after doing a fresh install. If not, you might be able to rescue a copy from the 4th partition of your old boot device. The filename is freenas-v1.db.

Any chance to repair without fresh install?

No.
I'm connected by the IPMI interface. Box get's into grub boot menu. Of course USB stick could be defective but I think this isn't the problem.
Regardless of this now I'm in doubt to stay with FreeNAS.

I can boot into 9.3-RELEASE-p16 single user mode.
A chance to do any kind of repair?

Regards
