I currently have 4 WD Red 4TB hard drives in one ZFS2 volume for a total of a little less than 8tb useable space. I want to add 2 desktop seagate 4tb drives and create and an new spanned volume volume as a backup to the original zfs2. 1) is this a good idea? or should the back up be exernal to the freenas box?

Ideally, you'll want it somewhere else, but that is better than nothing.

Also, something more resilient than a stripe might be in order.

I concur, your backup should be a separate unit.

I have a RAIDZ2 pool of n. 6 3TB WD Reds. Once a month I backup this pool to another pool that I put into the same machine. After the backup has finished, I pull the backup HDs.
