depasseg - Yes, but for some reason his drives are out of order. da9 not only is missing a serial number, but it's coming up last in the order. You said in a previous post that your boot device was last in the list at da12. Ericloewe, stated in a previous post that the last device was likely the boot device. Wonder if the drive is bad or somehow freeNAS thinks it is a boot device and not usable. Just a thought.

Did you only get 1 cable to attach your motherboard to the backplane? It shouldn't really matter, but you probably want to order a second one. Which port on the backplane did you connect it to?

jeffreyj900 - I noticed an earlier screenshot (the first one) showed all drives displaying serial number, but still having an issue. I have the same MB in a different supermicro chassis (ordered as a system) and it works fine.
Just 1 cable. It's connected to J0. I ordered 1 cable because I didn't know the LSI 3008 was going to work with a Backplace SAS2. Now I know it does, I should buy another one to drive J1 right?

my last da12-ish device was boot, but it was also USB. the dmesg output displays a later da device in AltecBX's as well, so I'm guessing that is his boot device.

I found this in your dmesg:
Code:
ses0: pass1,da0: Element descriptor: 'Slot 02'
ses0: pass1,da0: SAS Device Slot Element: 1 Phys at Slot 1
ses0: phy 0: SATA device
ses0: phy 0: parent 50030480013c1c7f addr 50030480013c1c6d
ses0: pass2,da1: Element descriptor: 'Slot 03'
ses0: pass2,da1: SAS Device Slot Element: 1 Phys at Slot 2
ses0: phy 0: SATA device
ses0: phy 0: parent 50030480013c1c7f addr 50030480013c1c6e

This is your enclosure reporting it is starting to count the descriptors at "slot 02" (for phys slot 1). FN might be interpreting the enclosure itself as a device instead of the 1st drive. try popping out all the drives except the 1st one (lower left) and check to see if you have a drive in freenas. (and post dmesg)

Can you do the same from Ubuntu?
You will need to install ssh server:
from the ubuntu cli, type 'apt-get install ssh'
then you can use putty to get there

or instead of dealing with ssh on ubuntu, from a terminal, type 'dmesg > troubleshooting.txt' and then copy the troubleshooting.txt file somewhere more accessible.
This is from Ubontu (Part 1 of 5):

Another way I'd break this down when you're done testing other os' s. Fire it up with no drives and hot swap them in one at a time. They'll show up in the console in real time as detected. You might isolate a drive or a slot... or see a behavior for a clue. The count where failure to detect a new drive occurs may also be consistent. Just things I'd play with if it were on my bench.

my last da12-ish device was boot, but it was also USB. the dmesg output displays a later da device in AltecBX's as well, so I'm guessing that is his boot device.

I found this in your dmesg:
Code:
ses0: pass1,da0: Element descriptor: 'Slot 02'
ses0: pass1,da0: SAS Device Slot Element: 1 Phys at Slot 1
ses0: phy 0: SATA device
ses0: phy 0: parent 50030480013c1c7f addr 50030480013c1c6d
ses0: pass2,da1: Element descriptor: 'Slot 03'
ses0: pass2,da1: SAS Device Slot Element: 1 Phys at Slot 2
ses0: phy 0: SATA device
ses0: phy 0: parent 50030480013c1c7f addr 50030480013c1c6e

This is your enclosure reporting it is starting to count the descriptors at "slot 02" (for phys slot 1). FN might be interpreting the enclosure itself as a device instead of the 1st drive. try popping out all the drives except the 1st one (lower left) and check to see if you have a drive in freenas. (and post dmesg)
I think you might be on to something. I'm trying that now.

This is FreeNAS with only drive 0 (lower left on chassis) installed. I saw the drive get detected on boot-up but I don't see it on FreeNAS. Depasseg I think you caught the problem!

try populating all slots except the first (lower left) and see if it acknowledges all 12 drives.

So after having only 1 drive in (lower left) FreeNAS didn't show the drive. I started inserting one drive at a time until all 12 was in and I notice all drives are shown by FreeNAS except the first one.
Depasseg I think you solved the problem. I think that's where the problem lies. In the first slot in the chassis (lower left). FreeNAS doesn't read it but it reads all other drives. Other OS's can see all drives. So how do we get FreeNAS to see all drives?

Here's a pic:

Yep. That works. By leaving the lower left slot open(no drive) I can see all 12 drives. I notice that da0 is not showing anymore. Why?

It might be a setting in the 3008. there might be a way to detect the enclosure last, or assign a different id to it. Looking at the Ubuntu dmesg output (specifically #4 of 5), it uses a different driver and therefore appears to enumerate differently. So it could be a driver thing. Or an incompatibility between the 3008 and the enclosure. Any chance you have an M1015 SAS2 card you can try?

No I don't. This motherboard is the only SAS device I have.

You can try supermicro support again. afterall, it's their MB and chassis.

I rebooted the machine. This is what I see now. da0 came back but the serial number is gone. WTF

Is the lower left slot still empty? Or did you put a drive in there?
I'd suggest leaving it empty until it gets resolved.

Yep. It's still empty. It looks like FreeNAS starts at da1 when drives are added will its running.
After reboot it started at da0 with serial number not displaying on da0.
With all this troubleshooting, I believe FreeNAS developers can work something out with this controller and it's drivers. NO? All other OS can see all drives in this chassis.
