Hi,

I am looking to build a linux based NAS and was looking for options/recommendations. Just discovered FreeNas :)

My needs are simple:
- HTPC (kodi not plex) (using a pi2 as front end wired)
- photos/videos storage and some local backups
- and later on, 2-4 ip cameras video storage in real-time and remote access to the stored videos (real-time feed will bypass the nas)

HTPC is currently done on a raspberry pi2 with an external disk drive and kodi.
Problem is that i am adding some security cameras and that will kill the pi. + the storage of the media area already killing the hard disk drive (2Tb)

I have an "old" desktop PC I am not using and was wondering what I could reuse to make it a NAS:

I am not using that machine for the past two years and i am trying to reconvert it to something smaller, always on that would serve the purpose above, while possibly reusing the pieces (i believe the specs are not bad!)

Would you have any recommendations?

Thanks

Grab your favorite Linux distribution and install your services.

You don't have ecc ram. 8gb RAM are the absolute minimum. You need some vms or dockers for your services. So a minium of 16gb ecc RAM is needed.
Your motherboard don't support ecc.
