This is sort of a weird issue.

I only have one VM running. It is a backup Zentyal domain controller which works great most of the time. Every few days or so, it seems to go to sleep, which is the best way I can describe it. It stops pinging and the webpage is unresponsive.

The fix is quite easy. I just launch the VM through my VNC fewer and everything starts working again.

Sort of weird, any ideas?

Bhyve process and VM getting paged out due to inactivity?

We had a similar phenomenon on our new hosting platform running dozens to hundreds of jails on a physical machine.

Customers' applications (inside the jails) would time out every day early in the morning. We found that besides the claims in the documentation that no tuning is necessary for ZFS on amd64, the ARC was eating all physical memory and customers' Apache, MySQL, PHP-FPM ... services were paged out because they were idle over night.

We solved the issue by limiting the memory available to the ARC. One quarter of your physical RAM is our current default starting point.

HTH,
Patrick
