Hey,

Noob here so please be kind. I'm reading around the subject as much as I can but still not 100% on a few things.

I have just got:

HP Proliant N54L microserver
1x8gb RAM
1x4GB memory stick for freenas OS
2x2tb Western digital RED drives
2x1tb older drives from a previous buffalo nas system

I am going to set it up tonight. But would like some advice as how I should set up this combo of drives. I am aiming to use the ZFS.

Any tips are welcome!

Cheers

Two vdevs mirrored, each vdev has the same size disks. That's my recommendation.

Thanks for quick reply.

So I create one vdev with the 2x2tb drives and another with the 1x1tb drives? The resulting storage space will be 2tb+1tb, but will have redundancy.

Adding the 250GB drive that comes with the server. Would that be useless? How would you do it, if it was a good idea?

The 250 GB is basically useless. You could use it as standalone pool without redundancy, but most people do not need such a thing.

As warri said the 250Gb drive is basically worthless. And to use a 5th hard disk with FreeNAS you'd have to install one of the hacked BIOS' for your Microserver.
