Hi All,

I currently use FreeNAS to run my VMWare VMs over iSCSI. I'm interested in backing up my entire 500GB ZFS storage to S3 as an 'off site backup'.

However, FreeNAS only seems to want to backup everything BUT ZFS. I had a jail which was successfully being uploaded to S3 but nothing else.

Has anyone had any success with this?

Thanks

Since everything in FreeNAS is ZFS, this is nonsensical. Do you mean that it will back up file storage (datasets and directories) but not block storage (zvols)?

Yes that's what I mean, apologies.

In that case, I'm not sure; the only good way I know of to back up zvols is by ZFS replication to another ZFS pool. However, since zfs send outputs a datastream that can be saved to a file, you could send that file to S3.

You can treat the contents of the zvol as a stream of bytes, but that's going to be painful for typical zvol sizes.
