ATA error count increased - What is wrong?

Ok, so I bought a motherboard, I believe one of the suggested ones in the hardware post. The motherboard I got is:
MBD-X9SRH-7F-O_SuperMicro mbd ATX C602J LGA2011 256GB DDR3 1600MHz SAS2

I also purchased the suggested raid card:
IBM SERVERAID M1015 ADAPTER PCI-E 2.0 X8 RAID CONTROLLER CARD 46M0861-LOW P

I've been running this setup for about 11 months (since Jan. of this year). And recently, like the past month, I started getting ATA errors all the time. It started on just a couple of drives, then later that day, a couple more, so I thought I had crap luck and my drives were going bad. I swapped them out for some new ones I had laying around as spares, and resilvered the volumes. It didn't even take a day before I started getting errors again. And pretty soon, I started getting emails from my freenas box with the following:

Device: /dev/ada2, ATA error count increased from 32 to 33
Device: /dev/da3 [SAT], ATA error count increased from 3 to 6
Device: /dev/ada5, ATA error count increased from 4 to 5
Device: /dev/da5 [SAT], ATA error count increased from 6 to 7
Device: /dev/da4 [SAT], ATA error count increased from 0 to 1
Device: /dev/da6 [SAT], ATA error count increased from 1 to 2
Device: /dev/ada4, ATA error count increased from 59 to 60
Device: /dev/da1 [SAT], ATA error count increased from 2 to 4
Device: /dev/da0 [SAT], ATA error count increased from 3 to 4
Device: /dev/da7 [SAT], ATA error count increased from 2 to 3

I did some reading, and most posts said that the drives are about to fail. I did long smart tests on a few of the drives I pulled and replaced, and all came back ok on the test. I came across one post that suggested the cables being zip tied together can cause issues because sata cables aren't shielded. I thought that sounded weird, but I opened the case up, cut the zip tie and spread cables all over the place to make sure that wasn't the problem. No change.

So, what I gathered from this, was that I am getting these errors from all 10 ports on the supermicro motherboard. I do not believe that any of these disks are on the IBM m1015. This seems telling, but I'm not sure what would be causing it, or how to go about fixing it. My FreeBSD / Freenas skills are very limited. I stick to GUI as much as possible, but I am comfortable in terminal so long as I know what I need to do. Any pointers would be very helpful!

Thanks in advance!

What brand and model are the drives? Do they all have adequate cooling? Is there any excessive vibration in the chassis?

ATA errors can be caused by something other than the drives: cables, power etc. It would be strange to have a whole bunch of drives start failing at the exact same time.

Are they by any chance Marvell controller ports?

It will be easier for people to help you if you post your full hardware specs, pool configuration and status, SMART output etc., per forum rules.

1. Hitachi Deskstar
2. Yes, it is about 50 degrees F. down where the chassis is, and I have quite a few very loud (high cpm) fans.
3. No vibration

Agreed. Seems pretty strange to me.

I don't think so, but how is the easiest way for me to check? Here is the supermicro board I have with its specs.
http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C600/X9SRH-7F.cfm
It says "SAS2 via LSI 2308". I am guessing that is it right there.

Sorry, I thought I included the pertinent information. The drives that are throwing errors are split between 2 pools. Each with RaidZ2 (6 drives in each array). They are both healthy at the moment. Strangely, 4 of the drives throwing errors on are one array (with 2 not throwing any) and the other 6 are on the other array (all the drives in that array). I have a third RaidZ2 pool with 6 drives, and none of those are throwing errors. These are all on the m1015 card.

I will say though that I just started getting an unreadable sector warning yesterday on one drive. I've been getting the ata error notifications for at least a month though, and every drive I did SMART test on has not returned any problems.

Are there any other specific specs that would be useful? I'm new to this, so not really sure what info to provide.

I have a Long SMART running twice a month, and a short SMART running 4 times a month. I assume since I do not receive any emails, that these tests are not uncovering any issues.

Post the output of smartctl -a /dev/$drive_names
Thanks for the hint on the command to run. I've saved output of all 10 drives to files. Silly problem, but I cannot seem to successfully copy paste them all. I'm using VI. I tried copying to buffer which did not seem to do anything :)%y). I also tried xclip (xclip -sel clip < ./smart_ada2) which appears that xclip is not available in freebsd. Stupid question, but what is easiest way to copy output to clipboard?

Thanks so much for the replies!

I can only select what I can see on screen. In this case, the output is 2 or 3 pages worth.

Thanks

Use less (like this: your command | less) and use the up/down arrows to scroll (space bar to scroll a whole page) and Q to quit ;)

Code:
CODE tags make smartctl readable!

Variable-width fonts and whitespace suppression make console outputs nearly unreadable!

Changed to code tags.

Thanks

The drives themselves seem ok, suggesting a host-side issue. Cabling is typical, but it seems a bit widespread to be something so simple.

Bad power seems the next likeliest option, since the drives are both on the PCH and the SAS HBA.

I had read something that indicated power being an issue as well, such as an over worked power supply etc. I have hot swap power supplies. The chassis can hold 4, but i'm only running 2 currently. They are each 350 w, and my server is running around 250 watts on average. Seems like I have enough juice, but its hard for me to test.

Maybe i will pull 6 of my disks (the 6 that are not experiencing any errors), so that it lessens the energy usage, and see if I still get errors.

Sorry for the dumb question, but what do you mean by PCH and SAS HBA?

Thanks!

PCH is the Platform Controller Hub, what is left of the entity known as the chipset. Those are the motherboard's SATA ports.
The SAS Host Bus Adapter is the M1015. Also, I just noticed you also have an SAS 2308 integrated on the motherboard, which kinda makes your M1015 redundant, in most cases - either one of them will do the job admirably, if everything's working well. The M1015 uses the 2308's predecessor, the SAS 2008.

Ok, the only reason for my M1015 is for extra ports. I have a 24 bay storage chassis, and only 12 ports i think on the mobo.

Any ideas why the drives on the M1015 wouldn't be throwing errors? Those cables are brand new, the mini sas to sata cables. The sata cables being used for the rest of the drive are like 10 years old. I just cannot imagine them all going bad within a day of each other.
