This IEEE Spectrum article -- "The Strange Birth and Long Life of UNIX" -- might interest the folks here on the forum.

From the article:
...with management dead set against the idea, it surely would have seemed foolhardy to continue designing computer operating systems. But that’s exactly what Thompson, Ritchie, and many of their Bell Labs colleagues did. Now, some 40 years later, we should be thankful that these programmers ignored their bosses and continued their labor of love, which gave the world Unix, one of the greatest computer operating systems of all time.

This is great article and I have now shared it with others who grew up during this era.
