I thought it was, but for some reason i can swear that when i downloaded the .iso for my cd drive install it said it was 8

here is what I TRIED to upgrade to via the GUI:

I am having problems upgrading via the GUI, and it could be because I am possibly not getting the right version? is it possible to install the latest version of 8 over .72 or am i looking at a complete reinstall?

this crash course in linux terminology and commands is killing me but I'm loving freeness so far...havent even done anything with it yet, but it runs circles around my infrant readynas NV+ that will soon be heading to craigslist or eBay...

You have to do a complete reinstall, it's not possible to do any kind of upgrade with .72 at this time, it's planned for version 8.1.

Please have a look at the links in my signature below. There are Official YouTube videos, docs, and the FAQ.

I plugged that USB drive into my freenas box, it runs, and i get this now:

I don't think you broke anything, but did you get version 8.01 or 8.0? Also which browser are you using? Here's the link for 8.01:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/freenas/files/FreeNAS-8.0.1/

If you get 0.0.0.0 for an IP address something's not right, is your NAS plugged into your router/switch?

Also, what hardware/CPU does your NAS have?

This is important so you download the correct version for your processor.

CPU is an AMD Athlon II 17ou

2GB memory

using safari on my mac which worked perfectly for .72

at the moment, i hooked up the original CD drive that came with the tower, burned an .iso, and I'm reinstalling it via disc to the USB drive again to see if that fixes anything second time around.

the version i downloaded is FreeNAS-8.0.1-RELEASE-amd64.iso

Im using the same ethernet cable that i was running .72 on and that one communicated fine with my network with no issues at all, so i don't see what could have changed between then and now

i assumed that was the correct one for my situation?

ok...the reinstall via cd worked...now i just need to set up 8...quick question: if my discs were software formatted by 72 and in raid 1, do i need to re-format those and 're-raid' them for 8 or do they retain their previous structure?

It depends on how they were formatted and configured. I'm not familiar with FreeNAS 7, so I don't know what the possibilities are. Ideally they should be able to be imported.

Just a small forewarning, FreeNAS 8.01 has issues, some of them were fixed before it was released, but for various reasons the fixes didn't get included in the final release. We're still waiting on when a 'maintenance' release will be available. A small group of us are making our own builds from the sources. At this point I don't see any of them affecting you, but just be warned that more upgrades may be necessary before you are finished.

Scott,

This following post highlights a good reason why FreeNAS 8 might not be a good choice for you right now. FreeNAS 8 is still very new and not stable. New users with limited tech experience may have a difficult time or get so frustrated they go back to the previous version.

http://forums.freenas.org/showthread.php?3028-FTP-problems...

I installed version 8 on a separate USB drive and just imported my drives from my 7. The transition was not ideal so many issues but the FTP issue made me attach my version 7 back into my machine.
