I have CIFS shares working locally on my network

But I cannot get AFP sharing to work.

I understand AFP sharing is faster for MAC's so am keen to make it work.

I assume you can share the same folders using CIFS or AFP . I have tried turning off CIFS - but that does not work either.

I have set folder and file permissions to nobody group and nobody user.
Still nothing.

there are no firewalls on my network . Could it be my Broadband router's DNS? I did not do anything to make CIFS work using the same network. Bear in mind everything is inside my network - but I am relying on the DNS inside my router ( Netgear from Virgin Media)

Any clues / solutions/ gratefully appriciated. I am sure its something small, but cannot figure out what else....

I can't solve your problem, but I will leave you with 2 tidbits of info...

1. If you share the same files in CIFS and AFP you risk corrupting files due to conflicting file locks.
2. Apple seems to be in the process of abandoning AFP and going to CIFS.

i was thinking to use my FreeNAS as a TIME MACHINE backup device. But that does not work either.

It has not worked for me in V8.3 - 8.3.1 and now 9.1. very odd.

As i said CIFS does work. I can stay there. If I got the Timemachine working on Freenas I could sell my TimeCapsule as well. But no luck.....

Although my FreeNAS has worked well 2 things I cannot get working since day 1.

AFP sharing and more importantly TIME MACHINE BACKUP.

I have used FreeNAS since V8.3 and now I am on V9.1

I still cannot make it work. The Basic NAS works - CIFS shares work.

So I know it can work.

i dont see any notes anywhere on how to debug it - anyone know anymore or can point me to some debug methods.

I put my personal deadline on it - if i cant get it working i wil lswitch to a DROBO box - they support Time machine and a few other things.

Good luck with the Drobo then. I've seen many people lose their data with the Drobos.

You won't see much help with Apple problems, mostly because so few people own Apple's.

Many thanks for the advice.
After more than 20 years working with PC's, working on the Windows platform with Microsoft debugging it, being a Microsoft partner. I was sick and tired of Microsoft's OS and the problems I got. Since changing, I have not had a single crash.
So the MAC platform just lets me get on with my real work. Not constantly playing with my PC to make it work.

Maybe an APple user can throw some light on debug methods. I know it should just work but it does not.

I gave up on time machine a long time ago. I just ride 'bareback' without backup of my MBA.

Hope this will help. My user that i am authenticating with is part of wheel group.
Rest of the settings are the default ones.

My FreeNAS 9.1 works perfect for me with CIFS, AFP (incl. TM) and NFS :D

How do you try to conect to afp Share? Any errors codes?
AFP is very simple protocol.

I can not get my Mac to work... CIFS or AFP

I am getting the error,

"items can"t be copied to "folder" becuase you don't have permission to read them. "

I did manage once to get my time machine working with AFP, but then i got the error Time Machine Sparcebundle in use error next time I rebooted.

I just wish this was a little easier to understand... I always considered myself IT savvy till i started this adventure.... I know nothing john snow.

LOL. You aren't the first one to think that and you aren't the last one to figure out you aren't as savvy as you thought. :P

I'll start with shoots of my basic setup following the guide, and then we can more on to more advance issues like TM.
I don't know how to post my console share....

As for connecting to FreeNAS, the CIFS and AFP folders I shared showed up right away in my Finder window under shared... I attempted to put in my username and pass, it seem to except it, but I still have the problems....

I don't know how to post my console share....

you need to connect via ssh to your NAS (ssh root@yournas.domain) then navigate to the directory /mnt and then ls -la. Now you can take a screenshot and put it here.
I#m not sure now - maybe has FreeNAS WEB-Interface a point "Shell".

Hmm, try please Finder menu "Go To", "Connect to Server" (I'm sorry am German and try to translate German Names to Englisch).
Now open a dialog box, write in it afp://servernameorip/QWServer and klick connect. Now you need to write user and password. Put please screenshot if you see any error message.

Never write "AFP". "afp" is correct try again.

And I see now, the WEB-Interface has a point "Shell". You can navigate to your /mnt directory and put here the ls -la output

Ok its easy, do you have no permission for this filesystem.

The easiest option is to change the owner on filesystem.

Go in to the Shell to /mnt (very important !!!) and then type chown -R wquibell WQServer

As last show if the afp service is running - you can stop and start it.

OK, now type in your shell "tail -f /var/log/messages" and try connect from your mac. If you see error again - put the screenshot from this "tail -f" command.
