I have some questions on whether it'd be worthwhile to use ZFS on this setup:

Machine:
- Atom D510 1.66
- 2GB RAM
- 2x1GbE Intel NICs
Disks:
4x2TB 7200 rpm directly connected to SATA on board
4x1TB 7200 rpm connected via Oxford 936QSE eSATA enclosure configured as RAID5

The setup I'm looking for would be:

[ tank ]
[ ][ RAIDZ ]
[3TB ext device][2TB,2TB,2TB,2TB]

Optionally, I have two 120GB SSDs that I can also fit to the machine.

The question is, with 2GB RAM (that is the max the machine will take) and if I use each SSD for both ZIL and L2ARC, will performance be totally useless given I will only have 512MB of useful ARC and a whole heap of L2ARC or not?

If ZFS is recommended over standard RAID, are there any tunables that decrease the ARC in RAM but maximise the L2ARC on SSD? If not ZFS, how?

General targets / usage model:
- Saturate as much of those 2x1GbE ports (in LACP mode) as possible
- File copying tends to be shunting or streaming of large (2GB+) files to and from device.
- 2 iSCSI LUNs for photos (Apple has decreed that iPhoto requires HFS+ volumes, so it gets dedicated iSCSI). This represents the only significant Random Access load the NAS sees, when iPhoto decides to update all the metadata or load thumbnails).
