HI everyone, first post. I currently have 5 x 4TB RaidZ volume. and want to add another 4TB drive to existing volume. can this be done without destroying the original raidZ? Using freenas 11. If it can, will the new drive be part of the original raidZ or just added and unprotected?

Thanks for you support!

If you do that you stripe in a single non redundant vdev and any failure in that drive will destroy your entire pool.

You can either back up the pool, recreate the pool with all 6 drives or buy atleast another drive so your new vdev could be a mirrored pair.

Adding a disk to an existing RAID-Zx vDev, to expand it's space is currently not possible.

There is a project to allow that, but it's at least a year out. And maybe longer, like 2 years before it would show up in FreeNAS.
