9.3 won't boot from USB

I had a 9.1.1 version running off of USB drive perfectly fine... but while trying to revive my PlexServer i decided why not upgrade to the latest firmware? That was a big mistake...
Tried upgrading via GUI and system never came back up after reboot... installed a new instance from scratch on the same flash drive that 9.1.1 was running before, installation completes fine and asks me to reboot. however upon reboot system hangs with a black screen and cursor blinking in the top left corner... have tried different USB stick, downloaded the ISO file again and reimaged, reinstalled - still same result... no output, no logs to look at...

I am at a loss... anyone has any suggestions?

Is the BIOS updated to the latest version?

There's a thread with a possible workaround that is being investigated, please search the 9.3 section for it.

i'll check to see if the BIOS is up to date, but from what i can remember it is
I tried going back to 9.1.1 and can't load it now either... asking me for manual mountroot on a startup... that will teach me not to upgrade

ok, i gave up... i just used an old HD and installed 9.3 on that - booted with no problems...
