I am attempting to do a gui upgrade with the following.
From: 8.2.0-RELEASE-p1-x64
To: 9.1.1-RELEASE-x64
With: FreeNAS-9.1.1-RELEASE-x64.GUI_Upgrade.txz
When I upload it I get
[MiddlewareError: The firmware is invalid]

According to the docs, this should not be a legacy upgrade.
What am I doing wrong?
I had a 8.3 box that upgraded just fine with the same txz and sha256 but
this box won't.

I would either upgrade 8.2 to 8.3 then 8.3 to 9.1 or backup your config, do a fresh install of 9.1 to a new usb stick & restore the setttings. IMO, ption two is the better way.

As paleoN said, I'd also do a fresh install of 9.1.1 on a new USB flash drive and restore the settings.

I copied the 9.1.1 boot disk I already made, imported the pools and restored the settings. Worked flawlessly. Now I just need to upgrade my pools.

Thanks

I´ve the same error like Stephen J.
On my system is 8.3.1 p2 installed and when I upgrade to 8.3.2 release with the gui update:
Sep 12 20:09:37 freenas manage.py: [middleware.exceptions:38] [MiddlewareError: The firmware is invalid]

The work around is the same, but that upgrade should work. Check the sha256 checksum. If that looks good you may want to open a ticket.

i have the same problem to upgrade from freenas 8.2 beta 3 64 bit installed on a usb flash stick, both using the
- FreeNAS-9.1.1-RELEASE-x64.GUI_Upgrade.txz file
or
- FreeNAS-9.1.1-RELEASE-x64.8_0_x_LEGACY_GUI_Upgrade.xz file

in both cases it says "firmware is invalid"...
does anybody knows where i am doing wrong?

tnx for help.

Nope. You download the file, then upload it via the FreeNAS GUI and provide the SHA256 sum. If you've downloaded the wrong file(for example .txz instead of .xz) or the sha256 sum doesn't match the downloaded file then you get an error.

You're of your own volition to figure out what your error is.

could it be the downloads page points to the wrong downloads?
i downloaded 8.3.2 update from sourceforge and upgraded fine, and the same goes for 9.1.1
